Self Care: Getting Ready for the Holidays

We’re getting ready.

Over the river and through the woods

is our holiday landscape of self care:

Soon we'll be sharing music, food, drink with those dear

while those we deem safe enough

we'll greet with arms outstretched,

our palms flexed;

we'll listen to their stories and tell our own next.

Before all this, though, an imperative:

Rest! -- bathe, find comfort in touch, in breath, in sleep.

Honoring spirit, dance, meditate, sing, or sit still.

Spend time out of doors, alone or together

reflecting on what is most precious in darkest winter

moving gently toward the warmth of fellow humans

the light in our eyes

the fire in our hearts,

the us that we are.

Some are resistant to this, they say

we should keep working harder jump higher now now now

and I say

what is so pressing?

to feed a revolution we must be fueled, fortified, refreshed

and with care, we can indeed thrive

as thousand-fold ourselves

So to those

who question

what you will get

and how does this "self-care" benefit everybody

just turn to them and ask

How do you plan on celebrating?

So many ways of getting ready for the holidays!

Here's one: hiking up high with family, where we discovered this snow-cocooned cone, a few hours shy of melting away.  This was on the trail last Tuesday after that first snow, Timber Mountain.

Warmest wishes to you this holiday season!

Breathing through the Holidays

As holiday preparations escalate, anxiety stifles our breath --- dampening  enjoyment of festive gatherings.  Take this opportunity to find an inner oasis of calm in the swirl of the season. Discover spacious containment in the breath:  a resource that keeps flowing on beyond the New Year.  Continuing to explore bottom-up wellness, we’ll be using hands-on contact, restful play, and movement to invite learning.

1 pm - 3 pm Sunday 27 November at Claremont Yoga

204 N. Yale (second level)

Nine Days of Holiday Stress Relief

IMG_0243 Discovery:  I have stuck my neck out!  Accountable for 8 more days!  To write about relieving stress, I start right here:  Anxiety.

Anxiety makes me want to go in circles.  Accountability makes me feel tied down.

Can I just hang out, in-between?

In-between,the circles become like waves; the ties, more elastic.  Anchoring. Supporting. Forgiving.

10 Days of Holiday Stress Relief

Anticipating.   In one long-drawn in-breath of incessant drumbeats the internal pressure increases making my head hurt till finally -- no more space to expand -- the wave crests, ahhh, sailing, exhaling, freely surveying as I look 'round from the other side.

Preparing for holidays I naturally notice anticipation building.  But while busying about, I can change up the rhythm by breathing OUT first and then later, breathing in.  So that's "Out ...pause...'N In."

Prepare ye.  Look 'round.
